Our Mission

Students for Philosophical Inquiry (SPI) promotes philosophical inquiry in K-12 classrooms nationwide. In the process, students will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for strengthening democracy.

A national, student-run nonprofit organization, we work with educators and education leaders to integrate opportunities for philosophical inquiry in children’s coursework—most often, in their English, social studies, and civics classes. Our members develop lesson plans, offer professional development opportunities, and facilitate classroom discussions.

In addition to our partnerships with schools and classrooms, SPI elevates local and state-level policies that promote children’s opportunities to practice critical thinking and civil discourse.
